Identify the puncture class before requesting attendance

A deflated tyre at a depot gate is rarely just a flat: it is a scheduling failure with a safety margin. The immediate problem is loss of pressure; the cause is usually a nail, kerb strike or failed valve; the solution is to classify the failure before requesting attendance. Run-flat sidewall damage, for example, cannot be solved by a plug kit and may require a replacement tyre rather than an on-site repair.

For a fleet operator, the spinboss call-out should start with that classification, not with a blanket request for “a tyre.” A sidewall bulge, a slow leak and a completely detached bead produce different equipment requirements. Misclassifying the fault inflates the dispatch window and can leave a driver waiting for a fitter who cannot complete the job.

Step 1: Secure the vehicle and record the tyre specification

  1. Park on level ground, apply the handbrake and switch on hazard lights; avoid stopping on a live lane.
  2. Read the sidewall for width, aspect ratio, rim diameter, load index and speed rating.
  3. Record the tyre brand, tread depth and damage location, then photograph the sidewall label and the puncture.

This record determines whether a mobile fitter can complete the job in one visit. A 225/45 R17 94W tyre with a damaged sidewall has a different dispatch profile from a 195/65 R15 91H tyre with a repairable tread puncture. Incomplete data turns a single attendance into a second visit and adds avoidable hours to a fleet shift.

Step 2: Match the tyre to the dispatch window

The dispatch window is the constraint that most often causes friction. If the vehicle is loaded and the shift cannot wait, the solution is to confirm the replacement tyre’s load index and speed rating before the service van leaves. A light commercial vehicle running 205/75 R16C 110/108R tyres cannot accept a passenger-car equivalent without compromising load capacity.

Ask for the expected arrival time and the exact tyre specification in writing. A fitter carrying the correct 16-inch commercial tyre can complete the replacement at the roadside; a fitter carrying a 15-inch passenger tyre cannot. The practical implication is to treat the dispatch confirmation as a specification check, not an estimated time of arrival.

Step 3: Prepare the handover and close the job record

Clear the working area before the van arrives: move cargo away from the wheel arch, unlock the wheel nuts if the vehicle manual permits it, and keep the driver available for the torque check. A roadside replacement is complete only when the fitter has verified pressures, re-torqued the wheel and recorded the removed tyre’s serial data.

  1. Confirm the new tyre’s sidewall markings against the original specification.
  2. Check the torque wrench setting and ask for the final pressure reading.
  3. File the job sheet with the vehicle’s maintenance record and note any wheel alignment follow-up.

That final record is the difference between a resolved incident and a recurring cost. A fleet that logs every spinboss attendance by tyre size, damage type and downtime can identify kerb-strike hotspots and adjust driver routes. The protocol is simple: classify the fault, capture the specification, confirm the dispatch window, and audit the handover.
